Self-hosted Asterisk or cloud telephony for AI calling?
When cloud telephony is obviously right, when self-hosted SIP wins on cost and control, and the volume at which the maths flips.
Cloud telephony is right for almost everyone starting out: no infrastructure, numbers provisioned in minutes, and you pay only for what you use. Self-hosting on Asterisk with PJSIP wins on three specific grounds — per-minute cost at sustained high volume, caller-ID control when you operate many DIDs, and compliance when call audio or recordings cannot leave your infrastructure. If none of those three apply to you, self-hosting is operational burden you are buying for no return.
Side by side
| Factor | Cloud telephony | Self-hosted Asterisk |
|---|---|---|
| Setup time | Minutes | Days — provisioning, SIP trunks, hardening |
| Per-minute cost | Higher, but zero fixed cost | Lower at volume; you pay servers and trunks regardless |
| Caller ID across many numbers | Managed for you, within the provider’s rules | Full control — SIP endpoints rendered per DID so each call presents the right number on the right trunk |
| Where call audio goes | Through the provider | Stays on your infrastructure |
| Who fixes it at 2am | The provider | You, or your partner |
| Call control depth | Provider API | ARI — full programmatic control of the call |
| Scaling | Automatic | You plan capacity |
| Suits | Most deployments, especially early | High volume, many DIDs, strict data residency |
Which one fits you
Choose cloud telephony if…
- You are deploying your first voice agent
- Volume is modest or unpredictable
- You have no one to operate telephony infrastructure
- You need numbers in multiple countries quickly
Choose self-hosted asterisk if…
- Sustained call volume has made per-minute cloud pricing your largest line item
- You operate many DIDs and need precise caller-ID presentation per number
- Call audio or recordings are contractually or legally barred from third-party infrastructure
- You need call-level control beyond what the provider’s API exposes
Where Skanda AI sits
We deploy both and we do not have a preference to defend. Most clients start on Plivo or Twilio because it is the right call at their volume. We build self-hosted Asterisk with PJSIP and ARI-driven call control where the volume, the DID count or the data-residency requirement justifies it — including rendering SIP endpoints per DID so outbound calls always present the correct caller ID on the correct trunk. Building this ourselves rather than reselling a no-code tool is a large part of why we can handle Indian languages and unusual call logic properly. It is also why we will tell you to stay on cloud telephony when that is the honest answer.

Frequently asked
At what volume does self-hosted telephony become cheaper?
It depends on your per-minute cloud rate and your trunk pricing, but the shape is consistent: self-hosting carries a fixed monthly cost for servers and SIP trunks and a much lower marginal cost per minute, so it wins once sustained volume is high enough to absorb the fixed cost. Below that line cloud is cheaper and simpler. The other two reasons to self-host — caller-ID control across many DIDs and keeping call audio in-house — can justify it at any volume.
Can an AI voice agent run on self-hosted Asterisk?
Yes. We run AI agents on self-hosted Asterisk using PJSIP for signalling and ARI for programmatic call control, with the speech and language pipeline wired into the call leg. The AI behaviour is identical to a cloud deployment; what changes is where the media flows and who operates the stack.
