AI voice agent or traditional IVR?

Why press-1-for-sales menus lose callers, what an AI voice agent does differently, and the calls that should still go to a human.

Short answer

An IVR makes the caller navigate your org chart; an AI voice agent lets the caller state their problem in their own words and handles it. IVR still makes sense as a cheap front door for very simple, very stable routing — two options, no variation. For anything involving a question, a booking, a lookup or a language other than the one the menu is recorded in, an AI voice agent completes calls an IVR abandons. Neither should take a complex complaint, a negotiation or a distressed customer: route those to a person, and use real-time agent assist to support them.

Which one fits you

Choose traditional ivr if…

  • You have two or three genuinely fixed routing options and nothing else
  • Call volume is very low and no one is abandoning the menu
  • Regulation requires a fixed, auditable recorded script and nothing more

Choose ai voice agent if…

  • Callers regularly want something the menu does not offer
  • You lose calls outside business hours
  • Your customers call in several languages
  • Routine calls — bookings, status checks, product questions — occupy most of your staff’s day
  • You need a record of what was actually said, not just which key was pressed

Where Skanda AI sits

We build AI voice agents on both cloud telephony (Plivo, Twilio) and self-hosted Asterisk with PJSIP and ARI call control, so a client whose call data cannot leave their infrastructure can still run one. In a live dealership deployment the AI handles 100% of inbound calls — test rides, lead qualification, product questions — passing only complex cases to staff. Where an IVR still wins: if your routing genuinely has two options and never changes, an AI agent is more machinery than the problem needs, and we will tell you that rather than sell it.

Frequently asked

Can an AI voice agent replace our IVR completely?

In most cases yes, and it usually improves completion rates because callers describe what they want instead of guessing which menu branch contains it. A common intermediate step is keeping the IVR for a single critical route — emergency, or an existing regulated line — while the AI agent takes everything else. Our dealership deployment handles all inbound calls with AI and transfers only the complex cases.

Do AI voice agents work with Indian accents and languages?

Yes. Our agents run in English, Hindi and Telugu in production with Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali and Punjabi supported. Speech recognition is tuned for Indian accents and for code-switching such as Hinglish and Tenglish. Speech output uses native script rather than Latin transliteration, because transliterated Indic text is mispronounced, and phone numbers are read digit by digit rather than as lakh and crore quantities.

What happens if the AI cannot answer?

It transfers to a human and passes the context with the call, so the person picking up already has the caller’s details and what was discussed rather than starting from "how may I help you". Designing that handover properly matters more than raw AI capability — an agent that fails gracefully beats one that is right more often but strands the caller when it is not.
