Buying guide

Build your own AI system or buy a platform?

When an off-the-shelf AI platform is the right call, when custom engineering pays for itself, and the hybrid most businesses actually end up with.

Short answer

Buy when your process is standard and the platform covers 80% or more of it out of the box — you will be live in days at a fraction of the cost. Build when the remaining 20% is the part that actually makes you money, when your data cannot leave your infrastructure, or when per-seat and per-message platform economics overtake a one-time build cost at your volume. In practice most businesses are best served by a hybrid: a platform for the common path, custom modules for the parts that are specific to them. That hybrid is what we deliver most often.

Which one fits you

Choose buy a platform if…

  • A standard platform already covers most of what you need
  • You want to validate that AI helps before committing engineering budget
  • You have no one internally to own a custom system
  • Your volumes are modest and per-message economics do not bite yet

Choose build custom if…

  • The valuable part of your workflow is the part no platform supports
  • Your data cannot legally or contractually leave your infrastructure
  • Per-seat or per-message pricing has overtaken what a build would have cost
  • You need telephony, language or integration behaviour the platform will not change for you
  • The system is becoming core to how the business runs, not a side tool

Where Skanda AI sits

We do both, and we will tell you which one your case needs before you spend anything. Our WhatsApp platform is the buy option and it is priced to be genuinely affordable; our engineering practice is the build option. The most common outcome is the middle: the platform handles the standard path, and we write client-specific modules on top of it for the parts that are yours alone. One live dental deployment runs an entire appointment lifecycle that way. Where buying beats us: if a mainstream platform already does exactly what you need and you have no unusual requirements, buying it directly is cheaper than involving us at all, and we will say so.

Frequently asked

Is it cheaper to build a custom AI system or buy a platform?

Cheaper upfront, always buy. Cheaper over three years, it depends on volume and fit. A platform charging per seat and per message becomes expensive as the team and the traffic grow, while a custom build is a one-time cost plus infrastructure. The crossover point is usually reached when either the team using it grows past a handful of seats, or when the process needs enough workarounds that people stop trusting the system. In India, focused custom voice or WhatsApp deployments start around ₹2–3 lakh, which many businesses reach in platform fees within a year or two.

How long does it take to build a custom AI system?

At Skanda AI, voice agents and WhatsApp automations reach production in two to three weeks. Computer vision takes four to eight weeks. Agentic pipelines and LLM fine-tuning take eight to twelve weeks. Our fastest production deployment was eleven days. A platform subscription is faster than all of these — the question is whether what you get at the end of it fits.

Can we start on a platform and move to custom later?

Yes, and it is often the sensible sequence. Run on a platform first to learn what your customers actually ask and where the flow breaks, then build against that evidence rather than against assumptions. The one thing to protect at the start is ownership of your data and, for WhatsApp, of your Business Account — those are what make the later move cheap instead of painful.
